As far as the Atkins Diet, I have been meaning to make a post on that for awhile but I always forget. Do you remember that time my dad was talking about it, Alison?

I am curious as to whether or not anyone here has tried it.

The thing is that it does work. If you buy the book and follow it strictly, a lot of people will lose weight. Some wont. However there are costs that one must weigh and decide if it's worth it.

I guess I'd like to start off by getting other peoples opinions on the diet itself.

I remember back in the late 90s a couple of the exs workmates went on the Adkins diet. They were both 50+ lbs overweight. They would come into work bragging about all the bacon a nd steaks they were pounding.Did they lose weight?Yes they did, like 20lbs each.

Whatever works for ya I guess.

From a farmers standpoint I see the impact on the potato industry.French fry consumption is down and thus demand for potatos is down and so is contracted acres for potatos. All the potato farmers I know are singing the blues about the adkins diet.Potatoes are loaded with carbs if you dont know already.

The worst thing that ever happened to the wheat industry was sliced bread. Before presliced bread, you had to slice your own,and thus you sliced bigger slices meaning you ate more bread. When it was sliced for you the slices to make your sammich were thinner thus you ate less bread,ie less wheat.

But these things are cyclical, and like yogurt stands of the eighties this too shall pass.

BTW,a few years ago I lost 30+ lbs by eating less and excersing more(the oldfashioned way)

i hate the atkins diet, i was talking with my wife about it the other day, she has a pretty strong medical background (and she's studying to be an RN or something like that) so she gave me some medical info about it.

first, i believe the lack of carbs in your system is horrible on your kidneys (it might be liver, or it might be somethign else, one of your internal organs).

also, yea, you can eat steak, and bacon and all that crap, "as much as you want", that doesn't change the fact that too much fat is bad for you.

does it really make sense? for as long as i can remember, i've always been told to eat bread, it's good for you, now, all of a sudden, mr. atkin's decided that people should stop eating bread to get healthy? i don't buy it.

these diet plans are wayyyy to hard for me to follow..isnt there a new one out now, "the south beach diet", you're supposed to loose up to 12 pounds in the first 2 weeks

but what i dont understand is lets say ya go on the adkins diet to loose 20-25pounds and thats all ya wanna loose, can u just go back to eatin what ya want? ordont you gain all the weight back?

ive seen one person on this diet, she wasnt even fat to begin with, maybe145 at the highest, shes down to 115 now, and it looks sickly...so i guess this goes with the question above? once u loose the weight u wanted to loose, can ya start eatrn regular again?

I was recently listening to a radio program on this subject and there was a caller that said she had been on this diet at one time....lost around 40 pounds....and then went back to eating normal.

She said that she hasnt gained any of it back.

However I am pretty sure that most people will gain the weight back if they go off of the diet.

As I said, my dad goes on and off this diet sometimes and he does, indeed lose weight.
His thing is he wants to lose the weight quickly by using the Atkins diet and then keep it off by eating better and exercising. He knows that its probably not healthy for you (although he'll argue with me about it all day long just to argue) but thinks that it can be a good jump start approach for people.
